New York City is known for its steakhouses. Throughout the city, there are restaurants where you can find a quality porterhouse, rib eye, filet, or prime rib. 1. Bowery Meat Company is a glitzy modern steakhouse that opened in the East Village in 2014. The menu offers the usual steakhouse fare in addition to modern takes like the “Bowery Steak” served with salsa verde and whipped potato, or duck lasagna. Starters and sides include patatas bravas, crispy polenta, and salmon sashimi. Also, Bowery Meat serves top-notch pasta dishes and oysters.
2. Strip House features dim lighting, red leather banquettes, a red carpet, and old-school burlesque photos on the walls. The strip steak (unsurprisingly) and dry-aged rib eye are the most popular choices. The sides are off the charts with goose-fat potatoes, and black truffle creamed spinach. They also offer a couple non-traditional dishes like pommes dauphine and smoked short rib ravioli.
3. 4 Charles Prime Rib is an underground West Village steakhouse that focuses on its beef, richly topped burgers, and elaborate sundaes. The restaurant was opened by Brendan Sodikoff, the Chicago restaurateur who is responsible for that city’s most famous burger joint, Au Cheval. Some other dishes include thick-cut bacon, brussels sprouts, cheddar baked potato and Carbonara Cacio e Pepe. The wood-paneled dining room boasts only 10 tables, making it hard to score a reservation, but worth it!
4. Sammy’s has been serving classic Jewish food since 1975 from a basement dining room decorated with business cards, photos of patrons and souvenirs. At Sammy’s, every night is a party that requires old school music and vodka frozen into blocks of ice. A signature dish is the Romanian tenderloin, a steak with minced garlic and served in a portion that is too large for its plate. The potato latkes are a must-order side dish as are the chopped liver and the stuffed cabbage.
5. Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Park Avenue is an upscale chophouse chain that serves dry-aged steaks, seafood, and wine in an elegant setting. The founder, Wolfgang Zwiener, was headwaiter at Peter Luger. The Park Avenue location is the flagship and will appeal to the most sophisticated diners thanks to its atmosphere, expanded menu, and professional service.
