Over the last year, our homes have become our gyms, our kids' classrooms, our happy hour hot spots -- and our offices. Most of us try to make the best of what we've got, fitting all this living into our city-sized apartments, and as a home organizer, people come to me to find ways to create a better and more productive remote-working life. Here are five tips based on my experience and what I've learned from others.
- Set up a designated workspace
When we live and work in the same place, it's essential to mentally "go to work" and create a designated work zone. Ideally, a workspace includes a desk, but if this isn't doable with your apartment layout, find a table or countertop. (Don't forget to account for what is behind you if you're engaged in video calls.)
Dedicate the space and some peripherals only for work use, and if you haven't done so already, an ergonomic desk chair could be one of the best investments you will make.
Then, when work is over, close your laptop and put it away. - Let's talk technology
Be sure to have access to the necessary power source. You don't want the computer to be on a low battery in the middle of an important video meeting.
If you find yourself overwhelmed with cords, purchase cord management tools to contain them.
While technology is the key to working from home for most, it can also be a significant distraction. Set parameters around social media and other potential distractions by setting specific times within your schedule to indulge. - Communicate expectations
Take the new year as an opportunity to check in with anyone who will be home with you during the day and set boundaries you need to stay productive. Whether it's roommates, spouses, or children (not that they'll always listen), boundaries should be set and respected.
Also, keep in mind that working from home does not mean working 24 hours a day. I encourage everyone to set expectations with their co-workers and bosses and be clear about what times you will not be available, whether it's scheduled time with your family or "you- time." It's important to take care of yourself. - Create and keep a schedule
There's no arguing that being home comes with a suite of distractions. The name of the game is staying on track during the workday and avoiding those distractions. Along with these other tips, I highly suggest creating a "plan for the day" to stay productive. Writing out a daily schedule sets you up for success at work and can help you designate time to fit healthy personal habits into your day. In addition to work tasks, remember to make time for regular breaks; this allows your brain to refocus and relax. Use your break to get a snack, drink water, get fresh air, or check on your family. - Clear surface, clear mind
Keep office supplies accessible yet easy to be put away at day's end to avoid cluttering your workspace. Depending on your needs, there are different storage solutions. My favorite addition to a home office is a rolling cart. Most supplies, files, and even laptops can all fit on a rolling cart. If you have room, store the rolling cart under a desk, countertop to keep any clutter out of the way.
The current pandemic has changed the way we work, so above all else, figure out what works best for you. For me, that includes a spot with good natural light, my favorite candle, and a little plant.
