When you think of New York City, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't skiing. Sure, you may be hard-pressed to find a mountain in between the numbered streets and lofty skyscrapers, but it would still be a mistake to underestimate the city’s ability to connect you to everything you need. It doesn’t matter if you’re a total novice or a pro skier: here are a few ski resorts a short getaway from NYC.

1. Mountain Creek - Vernon Township, NJ

About 60 miles from the city, Mountain Creek Resort makes for one of the easiest ski trips for StuyTown residents. The resort features four awesome peaks with 1,040 vertical feet and 200 acres of trails— some of the best in all of the Northeast. Expert skiers can plunge into a white-filled adventure on the steep Bear and Granite Peaks, while first-timers can master the basics at the base of Vernon Peak.

2. Camelback Mountain - Tannersville, PA

This 34-trail mountain resort has enough white powder to keep your skis busy into the spring. Beginners are encouraged to take a Camelback staple 90-minute group class, while hardcore skiers should jump right onto the eight advanced slopes.

Another killer Camelback attraction? A 50-foot airbag on the other side of a snow ramp to cushion your fall as you do your best to imitate Lindsey Vonn in the air. Bring friends or family along for the trip and, even if they aren't skiers, they can enjoy after-dark "galactic" snow-tubing complete with an LED light show at the biggest snow tubing park in the entire US.

3. Belleayre Mountain - Highmount, NY

Belleayre is a Catskill state-run mountain featuring 47 trails for varying levels of skill: 11 "green-run" slopes at the bottom of the mountain, 27 mid-level runs above that, and 9 double-blacks at the very top.

More than 175,000 skiers and snowboarders from across the globe have run the Belleayre slopes, but this resort never suffers from overcrowding, boasting an expansive acreage sure to accommodate all. Beyond the terrain and progression parks, Belleayre offers almost 6 miles of quiet trails, so you can fully experience the tranquility of the Catskills.

4. Hunter Mountain - Hunter, NY

With 58 trails, ranging from breezy to bold, Hunter Mountain Resort is a great getaway for skiers. The 240-acre grounds are also home to North America’s highest, longest zip-line canopy tour, located 600 feet above the ground. Plus, with their 12 lifts, everything is always running smoothly so you don’t have to be worried about lines.
