Boyar Gifts Has Unique Presents For Everyone on Your List

In the heart of Gramercy sits a unique boutique shop filled with eclectic treasures from around the world. Boyar Gifts, located at 383 2nd Ave., is curated by sisters Tali Alexander and Michelle and includes everything from Prince (yes, the singer) earrings to white porcelain diffusers from Shanghai.

One could spend hours scouring all the merchandise -- in fact, they get new deliveries every day from all over the world. Each piece in the shop has a story – and the owners love to share the details. The store also supports local artists, too, and even carries cute greeting cards from Yellow Oak Studio (founded by StuyTown resident Nuala Mellett.

And, this isn’t the sisters only venture; they are both pharmacists at the family-owned drugstore ProHealth (located next door), and Tali is a bestselling romance novelist.

Since opening, Boyar Gifts has been the place to find one-of-a-kind presents for a wedding, baby shower or birthday. (And of course, don't forget to treat yourself!)

StuyTown's Content Editor recently stopped by the gift shop to learn more about the business and to hear the incredible stories behind the coolest items in stock.

How did the idea for Boyar Gifts start?
Tali:
My sister and I always had a small gift section at our family’s pharmacy, but it was never enough to showcase. Then, this space next door became available, and we decided to go for it.

What I love is that you carry items I haven’t seen anywhere else.

Tali:
We shop the world. When we travel, we always bring back new stuff. Right now, we have items from Italy, Israel, Russia, Bali, U.K., France. Everything you touch has a story. It’s so much fun for us because we get to bring in all the things we love and share them with everyone. People go crazy for all the new items we get, too. You won’t have to worry about showing up with the same gift as someone else. Some of these things have never been available in the U.S.

What are some of your favorite items in stock now?

Tali:
Where do I start? I personally love it all. Up front, we have decorated fire extinguishers from France. They are fully functional but look like a piece of art. We have beautiful jewelry from Paris, conversational coffee table books and so much for kids, too. We also have a crazy selection of cards. I say they are “cards with attitude.” We support local artists, too. Like right now, we have these prints from Brooklyn-based Eve Devore. She humanizes owls.

I could spend hours in this store.
Tali:
Buying a gift can be a chore whereas, when you come in here, you can make buying a gift fun. Everyone who works here is just as passionate as us and will tell you the backstory of every item and the artists who created it. This place is a treasure trove.

What if you have no idea what to buy someone?
Tali:
We can find a gift for the writer, the foodie, the computer programmer or the girlfriend who loves rose. Even if you want to make someone laugh, we have a gift. If someone gives us an idea about whom they’re shopping for and a budget, we’ll find you the perfect gift – even for the person who has everything. And it’s okay to shop for yourself, too.
