Ferries around New York City provide a perfect opportunity for adventure, connecting residents to all different boroughs. The best part is that you can still be back home by dinner. Ditch the subway and check out these five cool places you can visit via ferry.
Governors Island
Governors Island will reopen to the public on May 1, 2021. With direct ferry service from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South St., New Yorkers can enjoy the Island’s 172 acres of open space, historical surroundings, and public art while engaging in recreational activities like biking, birding, and picnicking. Additionally, from May to August, Governors Island will welcome a flock of adorable sheep to live in Hammock Grove to help the Horticulture team control invasive plant species.
Please note: To maintain social distancing on Governors Island ferries, visitors must reserve ferry tickets in advance.
The Rockaways
Accessing this sandy stretch of beaches in Queens has never been easier. The commute time from Wall Street/Pier 11 to the Rockaways is approximately 57 minutes if you take the NYC Ferry. Once there, take advantage of the miles of beaches and boardwalk and outdoor eateries.
Staten Island
New Yorkers can enjoy the view of the harbor and Statue of Liberty aboard the free Staten Island Ferry that connects lower Manhattan and Staten Island.
Board at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal (also known as South Ferry) in Manhattan to take the 5 mile, 25-minute ride to Staten Island. No tickets are required.
Gantry Plaza State Park
Located in Long Island City, Gantry Plaza State Park offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline with 12-acres of lawns, playgrounds, and even a fishing area. The newly restored docks offer a waterfront promenade, picnic tables, and benches.
Perhaps the most recognizable icon of LIC is the Pepsi-Cola sign located at the north edge of the park. Buy tickets, via NY Ferry.
Hoboken
From West 39th Street (Pier 11), residents can take a quick trip to Hoboken, New Jersey via NY Waterway. Walk along the water, take in the fabulous views of Manhattan, and pick up a sweet treat at Carlo's Bakery of Cake Boss fame.
