It is officially cold and flu season. Personally, I wish we could just opt-out of this season, but alas, we cannot. With that being said, here is one tip for helping you and your loved ones get a little relief when you inevitably catch that cold.
Showers. They seriously do wonders. Obviously, they clean you, BUT they also help relieve congestion in your sinuses and ease coughing. Adults and big kids can get these benefits while actually showering, but little ones can benefit just by sitting in the bathroom as it fills with steam. My kid has been on-and-off sick with various colds since school started and the ONLY thing that really helps is a pre-bedtime bathroom hangout with the shower running.
Now, let's kick that shower up a notch. What if we could get that steam working double-time by adding the benefits of vapor rub to it? Vapor rub is great as long as you don’t have sensitive skin (hi, that’s me). So how do we combine the steam and the power of vapor rub? A shower steamer. These little guys can be placed by the drain in the tub and will dissolve as you shower, relieving some of your congestion and making breathing a little easier.
Cold Relief Shower Steamers
Ingredients
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons vapor vub
- ¼ cup baking soda
- 2-4 tablespoons water
- Ice cube tray or mold
Directions
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine the cornstarch and vapor rub.
- Add in the baking soda and stir until everything is fully combined.
- Add the water in 1 tablespoon at a time, making sure to mix completely before adding more water. You want the end result to be a crumbly paste.
- Scoop the mixture into the ice cube tray and place in the freezer for 2 hours.
- When ready, make sure to place them by the drain in the shower (do not use in baths). To enjoy the benefits without showering, just set everything up and hang out in the bathroom with the door closed and you'll have your very own steam room!
