Homemade Dog Treats

If you are a dog lover like me, you want to spoil the dogs in your life with lots of love and lots of treats. And since my love language is food, what better way to spoil my puppy nephew than with some homemade treats!

This recipe has only 3 ingredients, so it is super easy to make, and is full of good stuff for the dogs in your life. It starts with oats, which are full of vitamin B and linoleic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid that will help keep your little furball’s skin and coat healthy and strong. Next, it has peanut butter, which, in moderation, can be a great source of protein, healthy fats, niacin, and vitamins B and E. And last, we have bananas, which add sweetness and are high in potassium, fiber, and copper, and low in cholesterol and sodium.

Homemade Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Oats (or Oat Flour)
  • 1 Ripe Banana
  • ¼ cup Natural Peanut Butter

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F.
  2. Start by placing your oats in a food processor and pulsing until they are almost a fine powder. I used a mini food processor and it was the perfect size for this recipe.
  3. Cut up your banana into 1-2” pieces and add banana pieces and peanut butter to the food processor.
  4. Turn the food processor on and let it run until you have a dough like consistency. For my mini food processor it took about 7 minutes, for a more powerful one it will probably take less time.
  5. Take two pieces of parchment paper and place your dough in between. Using a rolling pin (or any cylindrical object; I have used a wine bottle before) roll out the dough to about ¼” thick.
  6. Take off the top piece of parchment and place it on a baking sheet (yes, we are going to reuse it).
  7. Cut the dough into shapes using a cookie cutter of your choice and, using a spatula, transfer each cookie to your baking sheet.
  8. Bake for about 30 minutes but check on them around the 20 minute mark just in case your oven is running hot or your treats are very thin.
  9. You will know they are done when they are a little golden around the edges and the bottoms are brown.
  10. Let them cool before transferring to an airtight container or giving to your pup!

A few notes about this recipe:

  • The dough is super sticky. I highly recommend using parchment paper to roll out the dough BUT if you don’t have any, simply process a few extra tablespoons of oats and use them to flour your surface to help keep the dough from sticking.
  • This recipe doesn’t make a ton of treats, so feel free to double or triple if you are having a dog party or just want to keep some in the freezer. I used the bone shaped cookie cutter from this set to make the cookies; it is about 3” in length and made 9 treats (plus a mini treat).
  • The treats last (in an airtight container) about a week at room temperature, about 2 weeks in the fridge, and probably a month or 2 in the freezer.
