There’s no denying that studying medicine in a large, urban center has tangible benefits. Access to such a large population of potential patients offers both the best in clinical training and a concentration of high-quality research facilities.
Those who choose to head to New York City to get their M.D/D.O have a plethora of schools to school from. Here are just some of the educational medical institutions near StuyTown and the East Village:
- Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, also known as P&S, is located at the Ivy League university’s upper Manhattan, Irving Medical Center campus in Washington Heights. Founded in 1767, the school pre-dates the Declaration of Independence and was the first institution to grant a Doctor of Medicine degree in the thirteen colonies. Currently, P&S is affiliated with New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
- New York University School of Medicine is located on 1st Avenue between East 30th and East 34th Streets in close proximity to Peter Cooper Village. It is affiliated with NYU Langone Medical Center. Because of its proximity, StuyTown is a popular choice of housing for school staff and those studying to be doctors.
- City University of New York (CUNY) School of Medicine located in Harlem, on the campus of the City College of New York. It is the youngest of all the medical schools on this list, having been established in 2016. It operates in partnership with Saint Barnabas Health System in the South Bronx. The program fast tracks a Bachelor of Science degree and an M.D. degree in seven years.
- State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, formerly known as Long Island College Hospital, is located in central Brooklyn, New York.

- Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Science and Medical College, together make up Weill Cornell Medicine, located at 1300 York Avenue on the Upper East Side. The medical center operates in partnership with the Sloan Kettering Institute. The school is located in Manhattan, rather than in Ithaca, New York, on the main campus of Cornell University, in order to be closer to clinical training opportunities. Because both StuyTown and the school’s facilities are located on the East Side, StuyTown is a popular choice for school staff and those studying to be doctors.
- Albert Einstein College of Medicine is located in the northeast Bronx, New York, in the Morris Park neighborhood. Since 2015, the school is part of the Montefiore Medical Center, after its parent institution, Yeshiva University, sold it to Montefiore to stem the operating deficit generated by the Einstein.
- Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, also known as TourCOM, is located at 230 West 125th Street in Central Harlem in Manhattan and has a secondary campus in Middletown, New York. It was established in 2007.
