Why StuyTown is a Great Choice for Families

For urbanites who have children or those looking to start a family, it can be hard to decide where to live. Consider: Stuyvesant-Town and Peter Cooper Village (AKA StuyTown and PCV), a quiet oasis within New York City's East Village, extending from 14th street up to 24th street in Gramercy that’s one of the most family-friendly neighborhoods in Manhattan. Why?

Spacious, versatile apartments

The StuyTown community offers a variety of unit sizes and types, from studios to 5-bedroom apartments, suitable for families large and small. Our junior apartments offer further flexibility with additional walled-off rooms for extra private space that can be used for a home office, nursery, or extra bedroom. These thoughtfully-designed layouts still offer the same features as other StuyTown apartments, like renovated kitchens, closet space, hardwood floors, and sunny rooms.

It’s super safe

With a crime rate far below both that of Manhattan and the greater metro area, parents can feel at ease raising – or starting – a family in StuyTown/PCV. And there’s plenty of care taken to keep it that way, with more than 60 public safety officers, 1,300 security cameras, 36 emergency panic call stations, and a high-tech hub command center located on the SE side of the Oval operating 24/7.

It’s very accessible

Located in the heart of the city, StuyTown/PCV is well-positioned for commuters, with easy access to the L, NQRW, and 456 lines by train. The M14A, M14D, M23, M9, and M15 buses are also accessible to residents. Commuting by car? It’s an easy hop to FDR Drive. Prefer to travel by water? Commuters heading to Wall Street or LIC can take the scenic NY Ferry, which departs from nearby Stuyvesant Cove. Alternatively, navigate the city using the Citi Bike station located on Playground 9 in StuyTown (this station is accessible only by StuyTown/PCV residents with your resident card and a Citi Bike key fob).

It’s easy seeing green

Stuytown/PCV boasts 80 acres of greenspace and is within walking distance of five great parks. Residents can enjoy outdoor events year-round at the central Oval Fountain, such as movie screenings, family-fun night carnivals, free fitness classes, and much more. Nearby Stuyvesant Cove sits on the river and presents a family-friendly summer concert series, Tompkins Square Park offers not one but two playgrounds, and Dias y Flores Community Garden gives would-be gardeners the chance to sign up for a plot. And don’t forget, StuyTown/PCV offers 15 (yes, you read that right!) playgrounds within our community.

It’s Fido-friendly

When we talk about families, we’d be remiss not to consider the four-legged members. StuyTown/PCV is definitely a pet-friendly community, with a few great options for outdoor fun for both the kids and their furry best friends. There are many dog runs within walking distance, including the Union Square Dog Run and Jemmy's Dog Run. There are also pet-friendly restaurants, care, and stores close by in the East Village and don’t forget to join us on property for our Dog Days events.

It’s got a great food (and nightlife) scene

Restaurants abound in nearby East Village and Gramercy, which boast an eclectic, vibrant dining scene. From tasty tacos at Yellow Rose to authentic Lebanese fare at Salma or fresh sushi at Hasaki, there’s something to suit every taste…even picky, young palates. And when it’s time to call a sitter and hit the town for Parents Night Out, the East Village and the Bowery offer endless options for watering holes to grab a quiet glass of wine, a heady beer, or an artfully made craft cocktail. In the morning, residents don’t need to go far to grab a fine cup of joe – just look to 5 Stuy Café, located on property, or head to Perk Kafe, The Roost, or B Cup Café, all situated within steps of each other just off 14th Street. Keep up with the trendiest spots to eat, drink, or shop with our neighborhood guides, whether you’re staying in StuyTown or exploring the many neighborhoods nearby.
